In Tokaido, each player is a traveller crossing the "East Sea Road", one of the most magnificent roads in Japan. While travelling, you will meet people, taste fine food, collect beautiful items, discover wonderful panoramas and visit temples and wild places, but at the end of the day, when everyone has arrived at the end of the road, you will need to be the most experienced traveller – which means you'll need to be the one who discovered the most interesting and varied things.The possible action spaces in Tokaido are arranged along a linear track, and players advance along this track to take actions. The player currently last on the track takes a turn by advancing along the track to the desired action and taking it, so players must decide whether to move slowly to get more turns or travel faster to beat other players to their desired action spaces.The action spaces allow different actions that score in different but roughly equal ways. Some action spaces let players collect money, while others offer players a way to spend that money to gain points. Other action spaces let players take part in various set collections that score points for completing those sets. Some action spaces simply award points for stopping on them or give the player a randomly determined action from among all the other types.All actions in Tokaido are very simple, and combined with the unique artwork, the game offers players a calm, zen atmosphere.
