90,000 BC – A great ice age is fast approaching. Unwittingly, another titanic struggle for world supremacy has begun among the various animal species.
Dominant Species is a game that abstractly recreates a small part of ancient history: the hefty encroachment of the ice age and what it means for the living creatures trying to adapt to a slowly changing Earth.Each player takes on the role of one of six major animal classes – mammal, reptile, bird, amphibian, arachnid or insect. Each starts the game more or less in a state of natural balance with the others. But that won't last: after all, it's "survival of the fittest".Through clever action-pawn placement, players will strive to become dominant on as many different terrain tiles as possible in order to gain powerful card effects. Players will also want to multiply their individual species to gain victory points.All of this eventually leads to the endgame – the final ascent of the ice age – where the player who has gathered the most victory points will crown their animal as the dominant species.But someone had better become dominant fast, because it's already getting very cold ...
