Dark times are rising over the kingdom of Thebes. The blind old king Oedipus has left the throne in disgrace and asked his sons Polynices and Eteocles to rule the city together. But power corrupts, and ancient feuds call for new bloodshed. Soon Polynices finds himself at the head of an army from the rival city of Argos, marching against his brother. The Theban nobles support Eteocles, who keeps a precarious hold on Thebes. The young king calls on defenders to man the city's seven gates, while seven champions of the attackers lead the assault on the gates. Meanwhile, the famous Theban citadel, the Cadmea, is in chaos. It is as if fate itself has turned everything against the current rulers of Thebes!While the common people prepare for war, the noble families whisper among themselves that the time has come for new leadership and that the time to rebuild the Cadmea is now!In Thebai, players take on the role of influential leaders of noble families in the turbulent Late Bronze Age. Throughout the game, players are tasked with rebuilding the Cadmea, the Theban citadel, while restoring the city's exports, praying to the city's gods and protecting the lives of its citizens, as great heroes spill each other's blood before the gates.The game lasts 10 rounds, each divided into an action phase and a fate phase. During the action phase, players use one citizen die and then move their Archon on the Cadmea. During the fate phase, players can gain additional scoring opportunities, depending on their achievements and on protecting the city gates. After final scoring, the player with the most victory points wins.
