Description
Dobble Connect adds a race for space on the table to the familiar symbol hunt. Between any two cards there is exactly one matching symbol, but this time you do not collect cards: you place the hexagonal cards of your colour next to each other and try to connect four in a straight line before anyone else does.
How to play Dobble Connect
Each player or team takes a deck of cards in one colour: pink, orange, green or blue. Place a starting card with a black outline in the centre of the table. Everyone plays at the same time, there are no turns. You turn over the top card of your deck and look for the symbol it shares with any of the cards on the table. You name the symbol out loud and place your card in an empty spot along one of the six sides of that card. Then you turn over the next one straight away.
The round ends when four cards of the same colour lie in a row, column or diagonal. The winner of the round scores a point and, before the next round, also receives some cards from every opposing team, which they have to play. The game goes to whoever first collects the required number of points: five with two teams, four with three and three with four.
Why you will like it
- Being fast is not enough: where you place your card matters too. You use it to extend your own line or to take the spot your opponent needs.
- You cannot skip your top card, so sometimes you are better off using it to block the others than to build your own line.
- The leader has a harder job: after every point they get opponents' cards in their deck and must take care not to help them complete a line. That keeps the game tense until the end.
- You can play individually or in teams of up to three players, so a group of eight can play too.
Who is Dobble Connect for
The game is for 2 to 8 players aged 8 and up, and a game takes about 15 minutes. The rules are simple and there is no text on the cards. For more than three players the rules recommend playing in teams, and according to player ratings on BoardGameGeek it plays best with three. Families and groups who know Dobble and want a little more tactics will enjoy it. If you dislike rushing and loud shouting, choose a calmer game.
